Antimicrobial Materials Testing

Antimicrobial properties are becoming an important new part of more and more of today's new products.

Sometimes the antimicrobial active ingredients are blended into a product, other times antimicrobials are bonded onto a material's surface. Sometimes antimicrobial coatings are treatments applied to another surface, other times the antimicrobial activity is "activated" in use. All these new materials raise unique technical and regulatory challenges.

We can help! ATS Labs has worked closely with the developers of many new materials. We often begin by defining the antimicrobial performance and durability of new materials using standard microbiology lab material test methods such as:

ASTM E 2149
Antimicrobial Activity of Immobilized Agents under Dynamic Contact Conditions

ASTM E 2180
Activity of Incorporated Antimicrobials Agents in Polymeric or Hydrophobic Materials

AATCC 100
Assessment of Antibacterial Finishes on Textile Materials

AATCC 147
Assessment of Antibacterial Finishes on Textile Materials via the Parallel Streak Method

JIS Z 2801
Japanese Industrial Standard test for Antimicrobial Activity and Efficacy

EPA 01-1A
Protocol for Residual Self-Sanitizing Activity of Dried Chemical Residues on Hard, Non-Porous Surfaces

Often we also work with you to develop custom methods to highlight the superior antimicrobial performance associated with new material technologies. Finally, we can guide you through the regulatory steps required for the successful commercialization of new antimicrobial products.
