Virucidal Surrogate Efficacy
Tests
Test Purpose
The purpose of this test is to
evaluate the virucidal efficacy
of a client's liquid or spray
product against a surrogate
virus (representative for virus
that cannot be propagated in
cell culture) according to test
criteria and methods approved by
the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency for
registration of a product as a
virucide for hard, non-porous
surfaces. The AOAC Use Dilution
for Liquids microbiology lab
test or the AOAC Germicidal
Spray microbiology lab test must
be conducted prior to running
the virucidal efficacy test.
Test Summary
A film of virus, dried on a
glass surface, is exposed to the
test substance for a specified
exposure time. Following
exposure, the virucidal and
cytotoxic activities are removed
from the virus-test substance
mixture, and the mixture is
assayed for viral infectivity by
an accepted assay method.
Appropriate virus, test
substance cytotoxicity, and
neutralization controls are run
concurrently.
