Testing Using Surrogate Skin
Surfaces
Test Purpose
This microbiology lab study is
designed to examine the efficacy
of a topical test substance
against selected pure cultures
of microorganisms using a
simulated skin surrogate.
Test Summary
Target bacteria are inoculated
onto a simulated skin substrate
and dried. The test substance is
then applied to the dried film
under conditions which simulate
as closely as possible, the
actual conditions under which
the test substance is designed
to be used. Following exposure,
the skin substrate is assayed
quantitatively for survivors.
The experimental design
evaluates the simulated efficacy
of the test substance.
