EN 13697 Quantitative Surface
Test of Bactericidal Activity
Test Purpose
The European standard, EN 13697,
describes a dried carrier-based,
quantitative, microbiology lab
test for establishing the
capability of a client's product
to produce a reduction in the
number of viable bacterial cells
of relevant microorganisms under
conditions defined by the
standard. The method described
is intended to determine the
antimicrobial activity of
commercial formulations or
active substances on bacteria in
the conditions in which they are
used.
Test Summary
A film of bacterial or fungal
cells dried onto the surface of
a specified carrier is exposed
to the disinfectant for a
specified contact time. After
exposure, the bactericidal
and/or bacteriostatic activity
is immediately suppressed by
chemical/dilution
neutralization. The number of
surviving bacteria in each
sample is determined by standard
culture plate or filter
techniques and incubation. The
reduction in viable counts is
calculated.
