AOAC Germicidal and Detergent Sanitizer Tests

Test Purpose
The purpose of this microbiology lab test is to quantitatively evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of a client's sanitizer product for use on pre-cleaned, nonporous food contact surfaces to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s requirements. The product must demonstrate a ≥99.999% reduction in 30 seconds.

Test Summary
A suspension of bacterial cells is exposed to the sanitizer for a specified contact time (30 seconds). After exposure, an aliquot of the exposed suspension is transferred to vessels containing neutralizing subculture media and assayed quantitatively for survivors. Appropriate numbers control, purity, sterility, viability, and neutralization controls are performed.
