ATS Labs
has Murine Norovirus
Human noroviruses are the most common cause
of acute viral gastroenteritis infections,
and symptoms may include extremely rapid
onset diarrhea and vomiting. Norovirus
spreads especially quickly from person to
person in highly populated environments such
as schools, hospitals, nursing homes, cruise
ships, and military installations. It is
extremely contagious due to the high
concentration of viruses in feces and
vomitus, the low infectious dose, and the
stability of the virus in the environment.
All in all, it is a nasty, highly infectious
virus.
Since human noroviruses are currently
impossible to grow in cell culture, the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
approved the use of feline calicivirus as a
viral surrogate for norovirus disinfectant
label claims in 2005. Although feline calicivirus and norovirus are both
classified as Caliciviridae and share
many similar attributes, they are also
different enough to cause many to look for
more relevant surrogates.
The best current surrogate is murine
norovirus (MNV), which was successfully
cultured by Dr. H.W. Virgin at Washington
University. Both the murine and human
noroviruses have extensive genetic
similarities and acid
resistance patterns which make the MNV
an excellent surrogate for human norovirus
testing. Currently, Washington University
licenses this proprietary virus/cell culture
system, and ATS Labs is one of the
few select antimicrobial labs to acquire the
license to test against murine norovirus!
ATS Labs can help you test your product
against murine norovirus, which is rapidly
becoming the new surrogate of choice for
infection control professionals responsible
for selecting disinfectants to help prevent
the spread of human norovirus infections.
